Sneaking In Fun: Girls on the Run

On May 13, Rutland’s Vermont State Fairgrounds hosts the Central 5k Run/Walk, which will be followed by the Southern 5k Run/Walk at Brattleboro Union High school on May 20, and the Northern 5k Run/Walk at Champlain Valley Expo in Essex Junction.
All three events “run” from 10am to noon, and all three are unlike any other road race you’ve seen. Instead of panting people trying to outpace each other ferociously, you’ll see gaggles of girls dressed as superheroes or wearing wigs and tutus, having the time of their life as they celebrate a successful season.
The difference stems from Girls on the Run Vermont’s fundamental approach to health and wellness. While coaches share lessons on running, stretching, hydrating and nutrition, they also work with girls in 3rd through 8th grade to develop self esteem and “the necessary tools to embrace their individual strengths and successfully navigate life experiences.”
Whether you have a young one participating, or just want to feel inspired by the potential of the next generation of Vermont women, mark your May and June calendars for one of these celebrations.
