Raising a Roof to Raise a Glass 

Last century, Maria von Trapp was famous for her picnic parties that brought everybody outdoors for refreshments. This century, however, Johannes von Trapp is bringing everybody indoors to eat and drink, in a refreshing new twist on the tradition of an Austrian bierhall — just in time to warm up winter adventurers.

Envision cross-country skiing among the Trapp Family Lodge’s 2,500 acres, and then clicking out of your bindings for beer-cheese soup and bratwurst, not to mention pints of pilsner and glasses of Golden Helles. The brand-new 6,000-square-foot Bierhall offers all this and more: live music, a perspective on the snow-quilted fields outside, soaring ceilings and a convivial atmosphere for refueling before the next outing.

The Bierhall is the latest addition to the expanding von Trapp Brewing empire, which began with von Trapp Lager in 2010 and continued with the 30,000-square-foot brewery last year. “It’s so exciting to have the Bierhall open right at the brewery,” says Sam von Trapp. “There are beautiful views of Mount Mansfield, so it’s a great spot for après alpine ski at Stowe in addition to alpine nordic skiing right here. The recreation going out right from the Bierhall makes it a great spot for people to park and access the trail system right from there. And with the observation deck, you can look out on the whole brewery operation.”
