In 2001, local citizens in Central Vermont formed “Green Mountain Community Baseball,” in hopes of attracting a New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) franchise to Montpelier, Vermont. In September of the following year, the NECBL voted to award a franchise to the group. The team’s name, the Vermont Mountaineers, was chosen from more than 300 fan entries.
The Vermont Mountaineers opened their inaugural season on June 7, 2003, and each year typically plays a 42-game schedule concluding the first week of August. The Mountaineers have generated tremendous support from sponsors, fans, and the local communities. The City of Montpelier has been very supportive from the beginning as “Central Vermont’s Team.”
